Welcome to Sunset Middle

Sunset Middle School is located in Brentwood, Tennessee, near the town of Nolensville. SMS serves sixth-grade through eighth-grade students who will eventually attend either Nolensville High School or Ravenwood High School. In 2012 - 2013, 2013 - 2014, 2016 - 2017, and 2018 - 2019 school years, Sunset Middle School was designated as a reward school for outstanding performance on the TN Ready state tests. We welcome you to come and join our traditions. Come learn what it means to be an SMS Saber.

We are the Sabers

Sunset Middle opened its doors for the 2006-2007 school year and was built to meet the needs of the rapidly growing communities of Brentwood and Nolensville, Tennessee. The Saber was selected as the mascot for the school by the inaugural class of students in February 2006. The school colors are orange, light blue, and navy. For the first nine years of our school’s history, enrollment averaged 750 students. SMS was named a Reward School for Academic Achievement and Progress for the 2012-2013, 2013-2014, and 2016-2017 school years. In 2015-2016, enrollment increased to over 900 students, and Mill Creek Middle was built to alleviate overcrowding. SMS currently houses over 500 sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students, primarily from the Brentwood and Nolensville communities. SMS continues to build on a rich heritage of excellence by offering a progressive yet traditional approach to education. Sunset Middle has and will continue to provide a balance between academics, athletics, and fine arts for all its students.

Vision Statement

We envision Sunset Middle School to be a place where everyone is actively engaged in the educational process. Lifelong learning is an expectation; learners are motivated to think critically, creatively, collaboratively, and independently while refining skills in the transfer of knowledge and understanding to new contexts, situations, and challenges. Sunset Middle recognizes the uniqueness of the middle school student and the importance of a successful transition period between elementary school and high school.

Mission Statement

The Mission of Sunset Middle School is to challenge students to be engaged learners, innovative thinkers, and responsible citizens capable of contributing to a democratic society.

School Hours and Schedules

Please see the information below on the various bell schedules observed at Sunset Middle during the school year.

Late Start Days

Sunset Middle observes Late Start Days once a week during the school year beginning in August and continuing through April. On these days students report approximately 45 minutes later than their usual start times. During this time, faculty and staff participate in curriculum clusters to discuss course objectives, prepare common assessments of student learning, and attend other professional development sessions.

School buses operate on their regular schedules on Late Start Days. Therefore, students who ride the bus or who must arrive at the regular time will be given the opportunity to choose from select supervised activities or a supervised study period until the school day begins. This is the current list of this year’s Late Start dates.
